It’s Time to Ditch Cat Stereotypes

Cats and their humans deserve better than lazy stereotypes. As someone who’s learned patience, love, and resilience from my feline crew, I’m here to challenge the myths that harm both cats and their caretakers.

Why Cat Shaming Hurts

Calling someone a “crazy cat lady” might seem harmless, but these jokes have real-world consequences. They downplay the deep bonds cats form with humans and contribute to neglect or abandonment. Consider this: In the U.S., 15% of people openly dislike cats (compared to 2% for dogs), and cat deaths in media are often played for laughs. Meanwhile, dog bites send thousands to ERs annually—but dogs aren’t labeled “vicious.”

The Science of Cat Love

Spoiler: Cats do love us back—maybe even more than dogs. A study found 65% of cats form secure attachments to humans (vs. 58% of dogs). And when given the choice between food, toys, or human interaction? Most cats pick us. They just need time to trust, like many of us do.

Cats Are Individuals, Not Mascots

My cats, Melvin and Janet, greet me at the door, sleep curled up beside me, and even play fetch. Not all cats act the same—and that’s the point. They’re complex creatures who express love uniquely: a slow blink, a head bump, or a purr during belly rubs.

Rethink “Dog Person” vs. “Cat Person”

Saying you’re one or the other based on media tropes ignores the reality. Cats aren’t “less” than dogs—they’re different. And different isn’t disposable. Whether you’re team dog, team cat, or both, let’s agree: All animals deserve respect.

Final Thought: You don’t have to love cats, but you do have to stop writing them off. Their quirky, independent spirits make the world brighter—and so do the humans who cherish them.

P.S. Cats: 10/10 would recommend. (But don’t take my word for it—just ask any cat parent.)
